How Many Food Additives are There?

There are 35 categories of Food Additives in China's commodity classification, including Flavor Enhancer, Defoamers, Bulking Agents, Coloring Agents, Preservatives, etc., with more than 10,000 kinds of food containing additives. Among them, the food additives allowed to be used by the "Standard for the Use of Food Additives" and the Ministry of Health announcements are divided into 23 categories, totaling more than 2,400 kinds, and there are 364 kinds of them for which national or industrial quality standards have been formulated.

Preservatives:Commonly used are sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, sulfur dioxide, lactic acid and so on. Used in food processing for jams, preserves, etc. Antioxidants - similar to preservatives, can extend the shelf life of food. Commonly used are Vitamin C, isovitamin C, etc.
Colorants:Commonly used synthetic pigments are carmine, amaranthine, lemon yellow, indigo, etc. It can change the appearance of food and make it more appetizing.
Thickeners and stabilizers:Can improve or stabilize the physical properties of cold foods, making them lubricious and delicate in appearance. They make frozen foods such as ice cream maintain soft and loose organization for a long time.

Nutritional Enhancers:Can enhance and supplement certain nutrients such as minerals and trace elements (vitamins, amino acids, inorganic salts, etc.) of foods. A variety of infant formula contains a variety of nutritional enhancers.
Bulking Agent:Some candies and chocolates in the addition of bulking agent, can promote the sugar body to produce carbon dioxide, thus playing the role of bulking. Commonly used bulking agents are sodium bicarbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, compound bulking agent.
